Harris Pontoon Boats: what to know

Harris have been building pontoons in Indiana since 1957 and are now part of the same group as Lund and Crestliner. The Grand Mariner is the big one, the Sunliner the mid line and the Cruiser the one most people actually buy.

What to check before you buy

  • Look along the tubes for dents and pitting, especially near the bow.
  • Walk the deck for soft spots, which mean water has got into the plywood under it.
  • A tritoon with lifting strakes is a different boat in chop from a twin tube. Know which one you are looking at.
  • Check that every seat base is solid and that the furniture has not been sitting wet all winter.

Common questions

Which Harris line should I look at?
Cruiser for a family boat that does everything, Sunliner if you want more of the equipment as standard, Grand Mariner if you want the large one with the big engine and the full options list.
Are Harris pontoons good in rough water?
A tritoon with strakes handles chop well and stays dry. A twin tube is a calm water boat and will slam once it gets lumpy, which is true of any twin tube.
Can you ski behind one?
Behind a tritoon with 150 horsepower or more, comfortably. Tubing is easy. A twin tube with a small engine will struggle to pull an adult up.
