Regal Boats: what to know

Regal are family owned, build in Orlando, and sit between the volume builders and the premium ones. The range runs from bowriders through to express cruisers, and their FasTrac stepped hull is the thing owners tend to mention first.

What to check before you buy

• The stepped hull gets the boat up and running efficiently. Take it out and feel it rather than taking the brochure's word.
• On a sterndrive, the usual: bellows, gimbal bearing, outdrive oil.
• On anything with a cabin, check the head and where it discharges.
• They are less common than Sea Rays, so allow more time to compare prices against a smaller pool.

Are Regal boats well built?

They have a good reputation for finish and for hull design, and being family owned they have been more consistent than some of the volume brands. They cost more than an equivalent entry level boat and less than the top of the market.

What is a FasTrac hull?

Regal's stepped hull. Steps let air under the running surface, which reduces drag, so the boat gets on plane quickly and runs efficiently at cruise.

Bowrider or cruiser?

The same question as anywhere: a bowrider for days out with more seats, a cruiser if you want a bed, a head and a galley and will actually use them.
