Sea Ray Boats: what to know
Sea Ray is the largest name in recreational boats and the range runs from a nineteen foot bowrider to a forty foot cruiser with cabins. That breadth is the thing to get straight first: two boats with the same badge can have almost nothing in common.
What to check before you buy
- Work out which family you are looking at. SPX is the value bowrider, SLX the premium day boat, Sundancer the cruiser with a bed in it.
- On anything with a cabin, smell it. Damp is the enemy and it announces itself.
- Sterndrive service history matters: bellows, gimbal bearing and the oil in the outdrive.
- There are a great many of them about, which is good for parts and good for comparing prices.
Common questions
- Are Sea Rays good boats?
- Generally yes, and the range is wide enough that the question is really about which one. The SLX line competes with the premium day boats; the older sterndrive bowriders are ordinary boats that were built in large numbers and are priced accordingly.
- What is the difference between SPX, SLX and Sundancer?
- SPX is the entry bowrider, SLX the premium day boat with the better finish and the bigger engines, and Sundancer the cabin cruiser you can sleep aboard.
- Is an older Sea Ray a good buy?
- They are cheap to buy and the hulls last. Budget for the engine, the outdrive and the upholstery rather than the structure, and have anything with a cabin surveyed.
