Cuddy Cabin Boats: what to know

A bowrider with a lid on the front. The cuddy cabin buys you somewhere to put a head, get out of the sun and change out of a wet swimsuit, without giving up the cockpit.

What to check before you buy

  • Open the cabin and smell it before anything else. A cuddy is a small sealed space and damp announces itself.
  • Check the seal on the forward hatch. That is where the water comes in.
  • If there is a head, confirm it works and find out where it goes.
  • Look at the cockpit sole around the engine box for soft spots.
  • The same sterndrive checks as a bowrider: bellows, gimbal bearing and the oil in the outdrive.

Common questions

What is a cuddy cabin?
A small enclosed space under the foredeck, big enough for a berth, a portable head and dry storage. Standing headroom is rare and you should not expect it.
Should I buy a cuddy or a bowrider?
A cuddy if you want shade, a head and somewhere dry to put things. A bowrider if you would rather have the seats and the sun.
Can you sleep in a cuddy cabin?
Two people at a squeeze, for a night. Think of it as shelter rather than accommodation.
