Personal Watercraft: what to know

A personal watercraft is the cheapest way onto the water and the easiest thing to store once you are off it. One to three people, a jet drive and no propeller to think about in shallow water.

What to check before you buy

  • Hours, and whether it was flushed after every run in salt. Corrosion is what kills these, not wear.
  • Check the hull around the bow and the pump tunnel for repairs.
  • Pull the seat and look for water sitting in the hull and corrosion on the engine mounts.
  • Ask outright whether it has ever been submerged. One that went under and was not recovered properly is never right again.
  • Get the trailer in the deal and look at its bearings while you are there.

Common questions

How many hours is a lot on a jet ski?
Over 200 hours is high for a recreational ski and under 100 is low. How it was stored and whether it was flushed after saltwater use matters more than the number.
Do you need a licence for a jet ski?
The rules are set by each state. Most require a boating safety certificate, often for anyone born after a particular year. Check what your own state asks for before you buy.
Two seats or three?
A three-seater is more stable, tows a tube better and is far easier to climb back onto. A two-seater is lighter and livelier to ride.
